Discovery has to bring in Snyder’s Ultras
Modern-day fandom is a way of life, be it in cinema, sports or celebrity culture, fans are hyper passionate. A good example is the ‘love’ for football in most parts of Europe and especially in England, Italy and Spain. Supporting football clubs is passed down generations. Your grandparents supported a club, your parents did, you will and most probably so will your next generation. It is not something to casually check out when you are bored on a weekend. The atmosphere is electric and nothing else is quite like it. Your week is based on who your team plays this weekend. And there is nothing quite like a derby.
In Italy, these fans are called ultras. And in most of Europe, it is the same, supporting your football club with all your passion is what it is all about. A similar passion is displayed by fans of director Zack Snyder, the ‘Snyder Army’, if you may!
In Football, fans hold so much power. So if the head coach/manager is not doing well and the home crowd decides it’s enough, it is over for the poor guy. When the home crowd boos its own players for not performing, the players need to start performing or else it is doomsday for them. A united fanbase gives the team the 12th man, a divided and dejected fanbase takes away a player and feels like the team is playing with large boulders tied to their legs.
Snyder’s Army is very much similar. They recently advertised for a Batfleck movie via billboard truck outside Discovery HQ. Asking Zaslav and WBD to give Affleck creative control to make a “key chapter in the SnyderVerse” and the “best Batman movie ever made.” In the past, they have hired a plane in a bid to #RestoretheSnyder-verse.

DCEU had lost its fanbase after years of mistreatment
Something is going on about the DCEU franchise which is similar to this. DCEU started on a very positive note from the fans. People were excited to see a brand new Superman, a new Batman and the whole freakin Justice League for the first time on the big screen. But what happened was instead of backing the fans and their support of this new direction they listened to film pundits who for some reason seemed to irrationally hate this new direction.
So essentially DC told the fans to piss off and go away as they would find a tone that would bring in new fans and positive reviews. But the thing is you don’t suddenly find new fans.
For all the fans who were enjoying the new fresh take on DC Heroes by Zack Snyder with Man of Steel, Batman Vs Superman, Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad, they were told that what they bought into was not good enough and they would be replaced.
So then we got the Marvelised DCEU which consisted of Josstice League, Aquaman, Shazam, Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984.
Aside from Aquaman, all the rest are massive flops especially The Suicide Squad which failed to even bring its huge 200 million budget back.
And that tracks because why would fans of the original DCEU like this Marverlised version of DCEU. They tried to steal fans from the Marvel side but that failed miserably as Marvel fans already have Marvel, why would they need DC?
Discovery needs Snyder’s Superfans
So in essence that is what Discovery needs to course correct. DC has been making movies for a non-existent fandom for quite a while which resulted in the studio being sold for the second time in 5 years. Discovery cannot make the same mistake if their ultimate goal of flipping WB into a profit-making machine has any shot at success.
Compare this to Marvel for once. Their fans have been so happy after years of wonderful treatment that they will happily go to any Marvel movie and make it a box office success. They have faith in their studio to deliver upon their expectations and the studio delivers every time.
In an alternate universe where DC behaved like marvel and treated its fans well, The Batman would have crossed a billion since all the fans of the previous DCEU instalments would be very happy to give a new version a chance, instead of now a split fandom who cares for only what they want.
If David Zaslav wants to turn around the DCEU, he has to bring back Zack Snyder and his ultra fans to bring back the home support DC had lost a long time ago.
