According to reports, the set of ‘Stranger Things‘ has been described as “soul-crushing”. The show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, were too lax with COVID-19 regulations. The crew was drowning in a swamp. It exposed the creators to be cancerous in every way. There was no social distancing going on while everyone was being tested and masked. Due to the freezing cold rain, the cast began to snap. One actor refused to do any additional barefoot takes. The Duffer brothers forced their dozens-strong cast to wait in sub-zero temperatures while they rewrote scripts all day. According to one source, the crew had to wait for them to make up their minds.

‘Stranger Things’ slammed for a toxic work environment
The Duffer Brothers have previously gotten accused of toxic behaviour. In 2018, a ‘Stranger Things’ fan claimed the two were verbally abusive. Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators and showrunners of ‘Stranger Things’, apologised after a crew member accused the brother team of verbally abusing women on the set of the hit Netflix series.
Peyton Brown, who worked on the show as a crew member for the first two seasons, claimed on Instagram that the showrunners created a hostile work environment for women.
“I guess there is no better day than #nationalwomensday to say #timesup and announce that I will not be a part of the filming of Season 3 of ‘Stranger Things’. Why do you ask? Because I stand with my sisters”.
On IMDb, Brown is mentioned as a member of the camera department for nine episodes of the Netflix show ‘Stranger Things’. Brown never mentioned the Duffer Brothers in her Instagram post, but she did in the comments. The comments have since been removed. She responded to a comment asking if she was referring to the Duffers. Brown replied: “Yes, I am”. On that set, she saw two men in positions of power seek out and verbally abuse multiple women. She went on to say how she promised herself that if Bown ever found herself in a situation where she needed to say something, she would.
She went on to say that there was yelling, insults, and threats and that people were fired or forced to quit as a result of them. In a statement in response to former crew member Peyton Brown’s public accusation of verbal abuse, the Duffers said, “We are deeply disturbed to learn that someone felt uncomfortable on our set”. They explained that due to the high-stress nature of production, tempers occasionally fray, and they apologised for this.
They did, however, add that they believe it is critical not to mischaracterize our set, where we strongly believe in treating everyone fairly regardless of gender, orientation, race, religion, or anything else. They assured us that they would continue to provide a safe and collaborative working environment for everyone involved in our productions.
Netflix comes to the rescue of Duffer Bros.
There was no wrongdoing on the set, according to Netflix. Netflix stated in a statement that they investigated the concern raised when they learned of the allegation and discovered no wrongdoing. They assured that maintaining a safe, respectful environment on set is important to them, and they are aware that it is also important to the Duffer Brothers.
It’s worth noting how quickly Netflix appears to have decided on the Duffer Brothers. When Anthony Rapp came forward with allegations against Kevin Spacey on October 30, 2017, Netflix announced the impending cancellation of ‘House of Cards’ on the same day. The production got halted on November 1 to determine their next steps. Then, on November 2, eight House of Cards employees came forward with allegations of on-set impropriety. By November 3, Netflix had announced that they
“will not be involved with any further production of ‘House of Cards’ involving Kevin Spacey”.
On the other hand, after Danny Masterson got accused of raping four women, it took them months to kick him out of ‘The Ranch‘. While Netflix has an increased responsibility as an employer to respond more quickly to allegations about their own sets rather than allegations from outside the workplace, it’s been interesting to see who they clear, who they cut ties with, and how those decisions get timed.
